Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these medications must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
