Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
